Nothing says "Southern food" like Beignets. Yes, pronounced BEN-YAYs!!!

And we love them in the south, and when you go to New Orleans, you MUST, that is a MUST stop at Cafe Du Monde for fresh Beignets.

So, imagine our surprise when we stumbled upon the Jazz Kitchen at Downtown Disney at Disneyland, and they had them!

Oh, sweet mother of pearl!

So, I ate my Turkey Sandwich (mostly because I was starving) but really because my Mama told me that to get to dessert, I had to eat lunch. So, lunch I ate!

and then we dug right into the bag, or warm, powdery goodness!

And, yes, we licked our fingers....and we liked it!!!

And the truth is, maybe we ate 2.

Well, maybe we did. Maybe we didn't!

My sister and I completed my biggest personal accomplishment to date. Disney's Goofy Challenge.

Half Marathon on Saturday. Full Marathon on Sunday. Yes. 39.3 miles!

*I can't think of anyone I would've rather crossed that finish line with!

Fruit loops and popcorn! A family tradition.

As silly as it seems, fruit loops and popcorn have become a family tradition. Mix in a needle and some fishing line and you have Christmas Tree garland.

I'm not sure how it even started, but one year the boys and I ventured into the pantry to make garland. And this was what we came up with.

It adds the cutest bit of whimsy to our tree!

And we typically sit in the living room, on the floor in front of the tree. The lights of the tree light up the room. Christmas music on. No tv. No nothing else. Just us.

Making memories.

This year, we surfed Spotify for silly Christmas songs, I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, was the favorite of the night.

Now, don't get me wrong. The boys lose their attention for this tedious project quick. So we only did about 6 strands this year. Just enough for the front.

And I'm ok with it.

Again. It's real life. Just a tree full of memories. Nothing fancy, or over the top.

A family tradition.

Back in the day, when I started this blog, I started it because I thought it would be a great way to connect with other crafters, and to just put my thoughts onto "paper"....

And lots of times, I am really great about updating, but, since I have a "job" now, something that has just not been a part of most of my adult life, I am having to find that balance, between being a "stay at home mom" and a Disney Travel Planner, and then there are all of the little things....like this blog.

I love this blog. I love to be able to put my thoughts down, and then have them here so when I come back, later, I can see, just where I was at...today.

And, so, today it is.

Today has been a seemingly great day.

I've been busy about, with lots of "work" to be done, and a football banquet to prepare for. Lots of little details that go along with that, and well, I am not really a "football banquet" kind of person, so I am learning along the way.

Maybe just about the time Mason graduates, I will have figured it all out, and I won't feel like I am driving the Coach crazy, or that I am spinning my wheels.

Regardless, work to be done, and I had to meet a future Disney guest, to go over some details of their trip.

Anyways, I say all of this to day, it's been a busy day.

But, this morning, in the midst of it all, a quick chat with a sweet friend, only for her to tell me that she and her hubby are getting a divorce.

I felt like she kicked me in my throat. (um, imagine how she feels)....
I was just not prepared, and it saddens my heart to know that a wonderful marriage can get to that point, where it is just no longer worth working for.

And on my drive to Birmingham, it reminded me that none of us are exempt from this. None of our marriages are perfect, or spotless, or guaranteed.

And, it just hurt my heart.

And, then, Scott was busy in meetings all day, so we only chatted off and on, and that was just not what I needed. I needed to be one of those "whining wives"...you know, the one that calls, and has no regard for the fact that he's at work, because *I* am having a bad day, and I wanna whine.

Ok-well-didn't happen. And that's probably a good thing.

And then, later this evening, as I am just kicking into what should be a very productive rest-of-the-day, I get a facebook message from a friend, and he is sharing with me that he and his wife got sad news from the doctor, and their little sweet baby, well, that sweet baby has gone to be with Jesus. Even before Mom and Dad ever get to hold it.

Oh, what a break in my heart.

So many things I want to say. So many words I want to share. And none of them need to be said right now.

But, it's almost like my heart hurts for them so bad, because I know that grief so deep. And I know the heartache, and sad days ahead. And, I wish more than anything, that no one I ever know would have to go thru that.

So, I clicked over here to the trusty ole blog, just so I could jot it down.

And, I know that as soon as I hit "publish" it will all still be the same, and nothing will have been solved by this, but it helps my feelings a little bit.

And, one day, I will look back, and maybe both of these friends will be in a victorious day in their life, and I can say, "Wow, what a wonderful thing God has done in their lives"....

Good game. Good game.

We always like to cheer on the guys as they come OFF of the field after the game. Even after a loss. To tell them we are proud of them and we stand with them, win or lose.

So, tonight, after the crowd had cleared out and most everyone was gone...I saw something.

Scott was chatting and I was just standing, watching the world go by and I noticed...I noticed one of the coaches call our QB over to him, and he said "you played a great game. Be proud. Hold your head up"

And they chatted some more and they were quiet.

But you know what, he didn't have to do that. He could've been the typical jerk-coach that lets that kid hold his head in shame as if it was all on him. NO. Not this coach. Nope. He gave him something to smile about and be proud of.

So I drove home, just myself, and it really made me think of what a difference a year can make.

Last year, our guys would've rode the bus home in silence and in defeat. But tonight. Their coaches told them they were proud of their effort and follow-thru.

Our guys know they lost. Believe me. They are beating themselves up enough.

I am so so thankful that we have some of the best coaches ever!!

Hey, our record is not stellar, but our guys are. And we are building an awesome football program, and some awesome young men in the process!!!

Scott and I took a very unplanned trip to the beach this summer. Somehow, we found ourselves with no kids and no plans for the weekend, so we threw a bag together, grabbed our bathingsuits and out the door we went!

Jesus TOOK the wheel......

A mother's worst nightmare--

"Mom...I had a wreck"

Actually, it was a text:

Yes, a text.

**I had just left the doctor's office......two shots.....yep...one in each cheek......and was on my way to get my scripts filled. I have pneumonia. Lovely!

Needless to say, I was not in my right frame of mind.....and I was on the phone with my sister.....giving her the low-down on my sick-self.

When I get the TEXT!!!!!!!!

And the crazy part is, that was the BEST way. That kid of mine, he knows me.

He knew I would FREAK out.....so the text was a buffer. It let me know he had the wreck, and it let me know he was alive.

So-----of course...I FREAKED out. And I called him.

No answer.

Called again.

"Mom..I'm ok. I'm ok"

"Where are you?"

--He told me where he was and that a friend of mine from high school was with him. Already?! Wow! So thankful.

Anyways, I rushed BEHIND THE SLOWEST PAWPAW DRIVER IN AMERICA-----

And I turned the corner to a Fire Truck, lights flashing, his horn was stuck LOUD, police car, lots of traffic......

Where is he? Where is he?

Whew! I spotted him. Standing up. Away from the truck.

Goodness. My heart can resume beating again.

My sister in law, Chanda, was already there...taking care of him. And being the mother to him. Praise the Lord for sisters!

The long and short of it is:

He hit a piece of concrete in the road. Just a junk massive piece of concrete...in the middle of the road.....it popped his wheel and it folded under neath him. And he began his journey....into the ditch.

What a level head. He said "I just knew if I could keep it to the right, keep it to the right, I would not hit anyone else and that wall would stop me."

That wall...being a DITCH.

So, he said "I just held the wheel, and tried to keep it from going left into the other lane"

Then he finally got off the road and the airbags deployed (thank you makers of those) and ultimately, he hit the ditch.

The truck is totaled.

Mason is alive.

No one was hurt.

No others involved.

Thank you Jesus. Thank you til the end of time.

No, we did not have full coverage. Just liability.

So, the adventure for a new vehicle will be a painful one. But,that is ok. God is in control. It is just metal.

Anyways, I was reminded by my friend Amy, of this blog post......about when he got his license..just a few short weeks ago....and it all means even more now. Wow.

Again....tonight.....no sleeping because my meds have made me crazy, I can't breathe, my mind is in a thousand directions....

I am reminded that life is short. Kids grow up. Moments with them are precious and so much of the day-to-day crap does not matter.

I hugged him a few extra thousand times tonight....and just told him I loved him. Period.

***and so, was the lifespan of the White Ford Ranger***

It was fun while it lasted.....and now.....off it goes into little junk yard heaven. Poor Thing.

Here's what I'm praying...

11:40pm. August 4,2011.

I should've blogged the last hospital visit with Pop. But I didn't.

He has infection in his body. Not sure of the source. He's sick. Very sick.

The best doctor ever just came in to tell us that he needs aggressive management in the ICU and LOTS of prayers. It's touch and go, he said.

And he was very sad. And apologetic. And I understand.

And I hate that I was there to see the look on my husband's face. And the reality that sadder days are ahead.

I know that our Jesus is a healer. But I also know that Pop's body is failing.

I'm praying for God's perfect will.
It's all I know.

I'm praying for rest. And wisdom and clarity.

I'm praying for low-stress and for togetherness. I'm praying for sweet moments in the days ahead.

I'm praying for loving friends and that this would not feel like we are on an island.

I'm praying that the same God that knew Pop before he was born, will give us the softest peace.

I'm praying for my boys. They love their Pop. This hurts them so much. This hurts me that they have to see him this sick.

I'm praying that no matter what...that God would receive the glory and that we would let Him use us.

I'm praying.

And I'm asking if you've read this...will you pray too.

So, I am 4 week post-injury and day one on the rehab schedule that the doc gave me.

Bike. He told me to do the bike 5 days.

Now. I'm not a fan of the bike. I guess my "runners ADD" kicks in and I wanna be making progress. Going somewhere.

But, I am doing the bike. AND I AM GONNA LIKE it ;)

And to be honest, I am supposed to be feeling great, and to tell the truth, my leg still hurts. It burns actually.

Very discouraging. But I just keep telling myself if I follow the plan it'll be all better.

There's nothing like a son and his father

Typing from the hospital as I'm watching my husband rub his fathers head, hoping for relief from this pain.

The tenderness of this is overwhelming. The thoughts of the role reversal and so many things run thru my mind.

I'm thankful for a husband that, when push comes to shove, let's that tender spirit take over and nurture the ones he loves.

Atleast I feel confident that I'm taken care of later in life.

Recipe: O'hana Bread Pudding

STOP THE PRESS!!!!

Have you ever been to O'hana at Disney's Polynesian Resort. Well, if you have, then you know the goodness of the Bread Pudding....but if you have not, I swear to you, it's worth driving there RIGHT NOW from where ever you live :)

So, it makes my mouth water, as I type, but, I thought that it would be sinful if I did not share with you this fabulous recipe.

Now, let me tell you that I tried it, and I am not a "candy boiler" kind of person.....so I burnt it.And when I say I burnt it, I mean that I had to throw the pan away. Not kidding.

So, YOU give it a try, and just invite me over :)

Ingredients
BREAD PUDDING
5 eggs
3 cups whole milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 1/2 cup sugar
8 cups french or ‘Ohana breakfast bread

1. In bowl mix eggs, milk, salt, sugar, and nutmeg. Set aside.
2. Cut bread in medium (usually 2-inch) pieces and place on cookie sheet pan. Put in 350 degree oven.
3. Bake bread until lightly toasted: about 15 minutes. Remove bread and place in egg and milk mixture.
4. Place mixture in a greased 10-inch cake pan, and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
5. Let stand 5 minutes; serve hot with ice cream.

BANANAS FOSTER SAUCE
4 oz sugar
4 oz brown sugar
4 oz corn syrup
4 oz unsalted butter
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup spiced rum
1 cup banana slices

1. Combine sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, and half of heavy cream in a large pan. Bring to a boil and slowly add remaining heavy cream keeping mixture at a steady boil.

2. Add spiced rum and flambe.

3. Candy will brown slightly; cook 3 minutes until candy forms into a firm ball in cold water. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Add sliced bananas. Serve warm.

I just watched him drive away. Alone.

No one in the passenger seat to remind him that there's a stop sign coming up.

No one to make sure he sees the green light turning to yellow.

No one to tell him the radio is too loud.

No one. No one at all.

Just him. Out the door. Down the driveway and out of sight.

I prayed as the tears filled up my eyes.

And, although I have such a strong faith in my Jesus, I also know the power of that steering wheel.

Sweet Jesus, keep him safe.

16 years of God's grace.....

I had no idea.....16 years ago, today.....that my life would be how it is today.

I had just absolutely no idea. I mean it. NONE.

I did not know of a loving God. I did not know of a forgiving Jesus. I did not know of a Love.....that could Love me....and forgive me.....and die for me.....

I did not know the love of sending a Son as a sacrifice.......

But.....what I did know 16 years ago today.......is that I was about to have a baby!

HOLY CRAP! WHAT?! A BABY?????????????

And.....um, excuse me.....Doctor know-it-all.....WHAT did you say? A boy????

What in this world am I going to do with a boy? What in the world do I know about boys?! Good grief.

Nothing.

I can so clearly remember it like it was just this morning.

The doctors prepping me for a C-Section.....you know.....telling me the whole drill, how it was all about to go down....and my mind racing.....not hearing a thing.

Honestly, it was a Charlie Brown Teacher WAH-WAH-WAH moment....

And I remember leaning for my sister, and I so secretly, and almost like I was confiding my darkest secret to her....I said into her ear "how am I going to love him??" and "I'm not ready to be a mother...I don't know HOW to be a mother".....and the tears just streamed down my cheeks. Not crazy crying like tears. Just the tears that come out, without you being able to do anything about it.

And, she told me "you are gonna love him and he is gonna love you...and you ARE ready to be a mother"........

And....well....this little guy......

The C-section.
The baby.
The recovery.

But, then I held him. Oh, I held him.

And I loved him. I loved him so much it made my heart hurt.

How did this happen? How did he do this to me?! I had no idea WHAT to do with him.....but I couldn't WAIT to do it.

This little guy. Good gracious. Is there anything cuter?

And, somewhere along the way.....he started growing up. He started walking and talking and running and playing.

He started having a personality. And I loved him even more. And I loved it when he loved me back. And I loved it when he told me that he did.

I learned along the way that when he went to the doctor and got a shot.....oh, I couldn't take the tears. Those days became " you can have an ice cream or happy meal or anything your little heart wants" days.....as they should!

I learned that my mom and dad were right when they spanked me and told me "it hurts me more than it hurts you".

I learned that when he fell down...and it hurt him so bad he couldn't catch his breath enough to cry.....that hurt my heart.

And as he got even bigger.....

I learned that when he spoke of Jesus, he believed every single word he said. With a child-like faith. A faith that us, as adults, need to take a lesson from.

This little guy.........wow.

I've learned that if I have a "quick math" question, I can ask him.

I've learned that the phrase "stinky boys" is an under-statement.

I've loved him every little phase along the way.

I've loved playing Legos with him, and I've learned that it's really not about the building of the lego's but about the process of "playing" with Legos...together.

And, then as he has gotten older.....I have learned that it's hard to let him go.

It's hard to let him go:
--on a trip with the GrandParents.....without me. But, man, he has so much fun, and he is making memories of a lifetime. So...I must.

--out with a girlfriend and her parents! How in the world did we come to this?! But, it's part of the process...so I must.

--over to a friend's house...that we don't really know very well, and then hear him come home and tell the stories of such a sad situation...but it teaches him that everyone has a story...and it's not always like yours...so I must.

--on a mission trip, without cell service, and hundreds of miles away. But, he is serving Jesus, and blessing others...so I must.

All of these things are the things that we have raised him for. Raised him to do. And, although they are difficult as a mom...I must let him spread those little wings :)

So, as I get ready to let my sweet baby get his Drivers License, and get behind the wheel of a car, and drive out into this world on his own.....

I can't help but be so thankful for each and every step of the way so far.

Don't get me wrong, it hurts my heart that he's not my baby any more. And it hurts my heart that he doesn't crawl up in my lap and "need" me anymore.

But, I am so excited about this new phase of his life. And I am so thankful that he still does hug me and tell me he loves me, and even sometimes, he tells me that he needs me.

And I am so excited about the phase of "young man" that he is entering.

So, Happy Birthday, sweet Mason. I love you more than you'll ever, ever know.

And, although I am thankful that Jesus set the perfect example....the example of loving a Son so much, that you let them go.....so that God's plan can be fulfilled....I have a feeling that my "praying knees" might just get worn out in these next few weeks and months and years.

She was his biggest fan....

10 years ago today, we lost sweet Kendall....and every time I see this picture. It gets me.

This was the perfect picture of her sweet spirit. How she wanted the best for everyone else. How she was so giving, and so loving.

She was so sweet and tender to me the whole time I was pregnant with Chappy. It was such a tough pregnancy.

And, she never complained about her sickness, or her aches and pains. She was just so loving. And tender. That is the best word I can find.

When I got this picture developed (yes, back in the day of film).....I could see the tears in her eyes, and honestly, it's like I could feel the joy deep inside of her.

She was her brother's biggest fan. She was his cheerleader. She always told him "love you, brother" and when she said it, she said it with the sweetest tone, and she meant it.

I know that she was so proud when Chappy "finally made it"! She was so so proud of her little brother. And that made my heart smile.

Now, when I look back, this picture is such a treasure. Just a simple reminder of just how sweet and short life is.

If I knew then, what I know now.....and that 10 years later, I would be blogging about her, instead of able to call her on the phone....I probably would've called more, and stayed longer, and...and...and....

Once we got on the ship, it was all systems go.

I LOVE the fact that the pool was full, but the Lifeguard was in his winter jacket! Fabulous!

Into the Beach Blanket Buffefet for lunch, and then I spotted this. I am not so sure why Ice Carvings fascinate me so much.....but....I love this Ice Sculpture.

GrandMary, I am sorry to let you know, but it looks like these people went all out on their door.....

And, then up to the Deck 9 for the Adventures Away party! These little cuties were ready for the party...and some characters!

And, I told the hubby.....it could always be worse...you *could* be volunteered to be one of these guys!

And, there’s the kids...on the upper deck!

Then, back to the room......and I spotted this in the bathroom! I think I heard the angels sing!!! I absolutely LOVE the Spa H20 that is always on the Disney Cruise. My favorite!

When we arrived in our room, we had a Castaway Club Welcome Gift! How exciting! And...this little bag came in handy...lots!

And, our room. We booked a category 9.....the least expensive that was available, and I was absolutely NOT disappointed. I am certain that a Verandah Stateroom would’ve been nice to have on those port days, but honestly, we were totally fine with our Porthole Verandah, and have absolutely no regrets.

**Now, I will say, on the Disney Dream, our bed was MUCH more comfortable, but....this one wasn't too shabby....

GrandMary made this cute little Bon Voyage banner for our door! Absolutely precious!

And, then up on deck. Love the City of Vancouver in the Background. Very very cool.

I think no matter as long as I live, I can never get tired of taking this Smoke Stack photo, and every time, I am so thankful that I am on board, and even have the opportunity to take it! #blessed!

Welcome to Canada Place Terminal. I must admit, I was a little apprehensive, going into this “non-Disney” terminal, and hoping that the check-in process/boarding would go as smooth as is does in Port Canaveral.

When we arrived, it was beautiful. Not the same “cross-the-bridge-and-see-the-smoke-stacks” beautiful, but a very, very GORGEOUS view of the terminal and the ship at the same time.

This sign above the entry doors made me VERY happy!

Yes, We are here! Ready to proceed to checkin!!!!

And they had these cute signs (replicas of the infamous Disney Cruise Line luggage tags) everywhere! Perfect!

This is a little bit of “snobbery” but...so true. Not having to get in the “regular” line, we were more than happy to move over into the Castaway Club check-in line...about 1/2 as short...just one of the perks of being a repeat cruiser on Disney Cruise Line!

And, is there someone that can tell me WHY IN THE WORLD we did not think of these freaking cute shirts?!

And, then to the photo-op with Mickey! LOVE! LOVE!

And, the grandparents jump in! So so cute!

And, time to move closer to boarding. They scanned our Key To The World card, making it official.....we are getting on this ship!!!

Oh, my love for this place runs so deep....and to be here....is just pure happiness. I almost didn't know if I should jump up in excitement, or kiss the walls.

It was so vintage. So nostalgic.

This guy was awesome! A harmonica-playing-hula-hooping-guitar-pickin-street performer! Fun times!
Then, just a little bit of walking around, enjoying the market, and a little bit of sight-seeing.

And, then, off to dinner.

Now, let me say, I was NOT a fan of the wait. LONG. LONG. wait. But, we knew with a wait like this, it was popular. And must be good.

And, indeed. It was.

First off, a little bit of paper, to prepare the table. And, some bibs for the mess.
And, the paper, well, not so clean after a few friendly (mom tries to win!) game of Tic Tac Toe!!!

Then, he dumped the food on the table. And we were ok with it.

What an exciting day! It seems like we booked this trip so long ago, and it is FINALLY here.

So, we start our journey in Seattle....well flying out of Birmingham, 7:30am, layover in Baltimore, and then finally in Seattle!

In an effort to be frugal, and also, to explore our options and see the city, we decided to take the train to our hotel. Well, I am not sure this was the BEST option, with luggage in hand, but honestly, it was a great way to see the city. Lots of stops on the train, and we saw some interesting sights, that we otherwise would not have seen.

One problem, well, we are not really good at reading signs :) oops!

We did, however, pass Safeco field, where Seattle was playing the Yankees. Dang it, why did I not look that up. How fun, to see a Yankess game?! Oh well...guess we will have to go to NYC :)

Is this Starbucks Headquarters, or do they just have this cute coffee lady on the top, just for kicks!!! Of course....we are in the Coffee Capitol of the world!!!!!!!!

First stop....Space Needle. We did not actually go up in there....YET......but we had to stop for photos!!!

And, of course, Mr. Personality!

So, I love a city that relies heavily on public transportation. I am not sure why I love it so. I love buses, and trains, and taxis. I love it. And, this place....has a monorail! LOVE!

And, then, off to the market. The infamous Pike's Place Market! I have always thought this place looked so cool! And, indeed, in real life, it does. It's dirty. And very public. And I LOVE it!

And, then, into the Market. My friend, Mandy, recommended Beechers. And.....can I just say.

Mac N Cheese. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!

Wednesday, morning, April 27,2011.

It was a normal morning. Dark still at 5:50am and VERY muggy outside. Well, the muggy part is not normal for this week...that should've been my first sign.

But, it wasn't.

I put on my running clothes, to ready myself for a 5-miler to get the day going. I love these morning runs, so I was all stretched and ready, and off I go.

WAIT.

It's still a little dark outside. ( and it's not safe for me to run in the dark....) so I thought to myself, maybe I just need to give it about 5-10 minutes. Let it lighten up a little.

So, natural, the whole house is asleep, so I flip up the laptop, to check facebook :)

And, my friend Virginia 's status said :

And i'm up . Good morning, tornado sirens. It's gonna be a long day.

She had no idea.

So, she lives about 15 minutes away.

How weird.

Why would her tornado sirens be going off?

hmmm..

weird.

Then, I clicked on her wall, to see if it said anything else. Nope. Normal stuff.

Back to Facebook home.

Where 2 other people had mentioned the sirens.

WHAT?! VERY weird.

So, I turn the news on, looking for my favorite weather man, James Spann. And, I always know if he is on, then it's for real.

So, he was NOT on. I sat there watching the weather, wondering if it was even close, or what.

Still stretching my legs. Running shoes on. Watching. Deciding.

Then, my status:

Where is James Spann....I need to be able to look at his tie/jacket/suspenders and see if this thing is for real?!

It's almost as if God said "Hey, stubborn, it's legit"

Because within seconds, here comes James Spann, dashing in like a super hero, with his Mac Book Pro, ready to get this weather news out to the masses.

Needless to say, I sat and watched. (and eventually, took my running shoes off)

The sky turned dark. The wind picked up. The leaves whistled as they flew across the yard.

The thunder boomed, and the next thing we knew....... (when I would have been at about mile 3....out where it was too far to get home)

Major devastation hit our city. Not my home. Not my family. We are all safe. Praise the Lord.

The rest of the day would bring MORE storms. and More rain. And not just devastation, but just simple tragedy.

Thousands upon thousands of homes destroyed, and the death toll makes my stomach turn just to think about it.

But, our sweet Sweet Home Alabama has already begun work relief efforts, and the communities are in full recovery & restoration mode.

I love the thought of people helping people. Not with an agenda, but honestly, with a thankful heart.

So, my hubby and my boys went camping a few weekends ago, with some friends. The friends consisted of other couples...and their kids.....but, I was the only mom who opted out of the trip.

Now, let me say that there were other men...who were supposed to go solo, but they backed out...so, it left my hubby as the solo one of the bunch, which in turn, made me feel bad.

When they got home, the boys raved and raved about how much fun Mrs. So and so was...and how much Mrs. So and So was not scared...and she hiked, and blah blah blah.

So, I proclaimed to my family, "hey, I know. I am a terrible mom. I am sorry, I wish your wife and mom were way more cool and could EVEN STAND THE THOUGHT OF CAMPING AND PEEING IN A DUG HOLE" (are you kidding!)

Anyways, Chap then proceeded to say "You're not a bad mom, Mom....you just have way more fun in other ways".

So.....there!

I am feeling all mushy about it. I think I might just make a craft :)

Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie Treats!!!!!

Ok, here's the deal! I love the Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie Treats.

No......I mean. I LOVE....totally LOVE....like...get super happy.....LOVE them!

So, when I saw this pan at Wal-Mart....I nearly flipped my lid!

I have been saving this little craft for Spring Break...and was so happy to have a "down day" with nothing planned.....and as I type...it is 2:43 pm and we are all 3 still in our pj's.....and I am totally cool with that!

So, let's get started!

Easy! Melt your butter and your marshmallows together. ON LOW. Do not burn them.
While you are waiting on these to melt, go ahead and get everything else ready.

You will need 6 cups of Rice Krispies measured out and ready.
Then, spray the pan. I love this Crisco cooking spray. It sprays so easy...and does not have a "taste" to it! Easy!

When your marshmallow/butter mixture is ready.....and I mean VERY melty......go ahead and add your Rice Krispies.

STIR QUICKLY.....and then putting them into the sprayed pan.

This needs to happen fast (this is why it is important to have it all ready....)

It's hard to believe.....but the ENTIRE recipe will fit into this one pan! Yes, this is pure Mickey Mouse goodness!

Now, don't worry, if it mounds over, while you are putting it into the pan. This is good.

You want it to mound over, so that you can "pack" it in there.....so it will take a good, solid shape!

Like this:

Ok, then, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, so it can become a little more "solid".....let the Rice Krispies become one :)

Flip the pan over (I recommend onto wax paper)
And, tada!!! MAGIC!!!!

How fun in the world are these!!!!

I have been looking at Home Office Desks and trying to decide if I *neeeeeeed* one, or if I can re-purpose something around here.

The problem is...when I look on their website, they have so many cool, pretty, fabulous looking ones....and well, I just can't decide.

This place is a wreck! A nice, warm cozy wreck...might I add...but still a wreck!

I think all of the winter cold has kept us in...and under the covers! And now that the sun is out, we are starting to clean it all up!

I think the first plan of action, is to tackle my Craft Studio! And, now, it has been turned into a little bit of an office for Main Street Memories, my Disney Travel business!

So, I set out on a 6 mile run...and was so burdened by God......that I picked up the pace, and after four miles, turned it around, and headed home...to post this.

I have never heard the audible voice of God, but He convicted me so hard in my spirit....I think I did today.
"Who of your "friends" will pray for Updyke?"

You see, it all started........Wednesday night. My sister and I went pay a visit to a family member in the hospital. IN AUBURN. Boo :)

So, on the way out, we decided to zip over to the University.....to check-in on Gowalla.....to leave a note for one of our dear friends (coughcoughLeighMarshcoughcough).

Anyways, when we "checked in".....an Auburn friend on facebook, made a crack about us being sad about the trees.

*Note: we had no idea about the trees.

So, we checked our Facebook feed, and saw a post about the poison. We made a crack on FourSquare...and off to see the trees...we went!

No, here's where the conviction comes in.

Since Wednesday night......

I have been deleted by 20+ friends on Facebook. (too sad, their loss!)

I have seen my "friends" post some of the following:
-Auburn fan posts: I hope he accidentally swallowed some of the poisoning
-Auburn fan posts: I hope he rots in hell. Along with all of you Bama fans for laughing.
-Alabama fan posts: Serves them right, they've been defacing Bear's grave for years.
-Alabama fan posts: The Barners deserve everything they get.
-Auburn fan posts: I hope they hang him from that tree.
-Auburn fan posts: New name for ALL BAMA FANS: Updykes.

*********Now, here's the part that just really gets me.

This man has a soul. This man is going to face eternity.

You honestly, honestly, hope that this man goes to hell? Did you seriously just say that?

You honestly, would trade a man's life, for the "life" of a tree? You would rather save a tree...and hang a man?

Then we wonder why our children act like idiots?

It's because they just heard you tell your friend that you hope a man rots in hell.

The Diet Coke and Mentos Project

This is what happens when Mom goes out of town, and leaves three guys at home with way too much time on their hands!!

Well, really....the truth is...they had to get Chap's Science Fair project finished. And, he had already done all of the "paper work"...the research, the letters for his board, he had it all ready and in place.

They started the "testing" at 6am.....

But, the actual "experiment" still had to take place.

So, I left them with 3 Diet Cokes, and somehow, they ended up with 7 Diet Cokes, that they set all over the yard to explode!

Crazy. Crazy. I can only imagine how it all unfolded.

But, they had a blast, and memories were certainly made!

And, here was a little bit of the end results!

Walt Disney World - Goofy Challenge

39.3 Miles. 2 Days. 1 Sister. Cute Socks. Fabulous!

Honestly, I would love to do a long blog post about this race...and I will, at some point. However, for now, I will tell you, if you are even *thinking* about doing it....go for it!

Grab a friend, go register, and do it. It was one of the most funnest, rewarding races ever!

Was it hard...not as hard as I expected.

Were there times when I wanted to quit. Yes, stupid mile 19. Stupid 19. Stupid hairpin turn. Stupid bridge. Yes.

Then, what happened......

I said outloud "uh...this is crazy. my legs are giving out. what am I gonna do?" and my sister, the most loving, sympathetic person in the world (just kidding...that is crap!).....she looked at me..and said "duh..you're gonna run".....and run we did!

But was it ridiculous fun! Yes!

Last night, I found this picture...Mason drew...the night before Elijah's funeral.

Here's the BEST part....we had not told him yet. He knew Mommy was sick. But...he had no idea what had happened. He came home from church that night...(quite honestly, I don't even remember how he got to church and back..so much of that is a blur)....and he brought me this picture. So proud. I asked him what it meant. He said he couldn't wait to teach Elijah about God............little did he know, Elijah was already in the arms of Jesus.

Oh, when I think back to the moment we told him....it rips me to the pit of my stomach again.

Every year, I have great plans for my self...and my mental state....and if I go back and read thru my posts from previous years...on February 5th...it seems like a skipped record.

I am not having a "woe is me" party...and I am not just drowning in my sorrows...but really just more of a "why me?" or a "why not let him stay?" kind of party. A little party I tend to have all by myself. Those kinds of parties are not really fun. Anyways.

But, as I was re-watching the Angie Smith video that I posted yesterday....that song motivated me....what an honor to carry him. What an honor that God trusted me so much with this grief. He knew that I couldn't really "handle" it....but he knew that I would. Thank you, Lord.

And, you know, that video is so true. There were so many little dreams I had for us. So many things I wanted to do. I had dreams while he was in my belly of all that we would be as a family. How much he and Mason would play. So many things.

But, I never dreamed that life 12 years later would still be so full of emotions. And, life would be so full...full of life. Full of love. Just full.

So, I spent most of yesterday and last night, scanning in old pictures, and strolling down memory lane. And, I am so so so glad I did.

It made me realize that I am so blessed.

Although I don't have sweet Elijah here (and when I even think of it, quite honestly--I ache).....I have so much more than I deserve. I have life so full. So...I spent some time...not mourning....but smiling.....I scanned all of these in...and put them to music....as a gentle reminder....even though it is not what *I* had planned....God has blessed me in ways I could not have even dreamed.

12 years ago today...I had no idea...that tomorrow, February 5th of every.single.year, would be the day....that I grieve...yet I celebrate...all at the same time.

I watched this video of Angie and Todd Smith, and she put so perfectly into words those feelings. Thankful to the Lord for our grief. Although it's not easy, it's part of His beautiful plan.

But, Lord, may I never forget that feeling of brokenness and dependence on You.

If you feel so compelled, watch this video, of just the awesomeness of God in what could've been so tragic, yet they allowed Him to use it for His glory.

Quiet Cove Cafe - on the Disney Dream

Cove Cafe is a little quite, coffee shop on the Disney Dream. You can order a latte, or even something with a little "kick" in it....then just outside the doors are the Adult only pool, and the hot tub that is more like an infinity pool....seeing into the sea!

This quiet spot can be very seductive. Drawing you into the sounds of the sea, and the slight rocking of the waters....and before you know it......here you are!

So, I would love to do a bazillion posts on all of the lovelies on the Disney Dream.....but, I am not quite sure I will ever get it all done.....so, I will do my best!

I want to start with this one. The nursery.

I mean, I know it is silly, but, this is the cutest little nursery in the world. (pun absolutely intended).

So many families will board the Disney Dream, and they will have little ones, that they want to put in the nursery. Rest assured they will be well loved.

Every little detail is taken care of, from the changing station, to the hand washing, and the cribs. This is a little slice of Heaven.

The theme, It's a Small World, could not be more fitting...and more inviting!

I won tickets to an intimate lunch with Magic 96FM and the Von Trapp Children. Very fun.

Very cool to hear the GRANDCHILDREN of the group that we grew up with, knowing them as one of the most popular, respected singing groups. Very cool.

So, I got to see some of my favorite people....

Main Street Electrical Parade

When I was little, and we went to Walt Disney World, we would always wait until the end of the night, find a spot near the curb, my dad would go get some popcorn for the three of us to share (never really worked out, because my brother would steal mine...) and we would wait anxiously....very anxiously for the parade to start.

I can remember that they used to come over the loud speaker and say "the parade will be begin in 10 minutes".......oh my goodness. that was the longest 10 minutes EVER!!!

Anyways, when the announced that they were bringing this parade back.......I was so super excited. And, then even more excited when I realized it would be showing during our visit to Walt Disney World in January.

So, of course, we found our spot......no popcorn involved......and waited. I am not sure who was more excited....the boys...or me! But, here it is!

New Years Eve -2010

Well, Mr. Smith and the teenager were out of town, so, we decided to go hang out with some friends and spend the New Years Eve with them.

Now, I am not one to stay up, just to see the clock turn, but I also did not want to just hang out at home, either!

So, I gave the little one several options, and he chose the girly-sleepover! So, off we went!

We made Ice Cream Sundaes, YUM! With LOTS of sugar and crap....at about 10pm, yeah, 'cause I am cool like that!

Then, we got all tucked in and ready for bed. Yes, sugar and then an attempt at sleep. He doesn't do so well with that :)

But, it was a great night had by all!

A great way to send 2010 out the door, and bring 2011 in!

Butcher Block and ORB

I have no idea where I saw this idea, about adding some life to my butcher block knife holder, however, I was feeling the need to spray paint sOmeThinG....anything....the other day....and this holder was the victim.

And, I am glad I did.

I emptied the knives out, and wiped it off real good, and got started. Yes, just me, and a can of ORB, and I was all set!

So, I gave it a good coat of ORB, and then, it still needed one more, so I did.

Yes, don't be jealous of my very creative painting try....it was cold outside, and the garage was the best option, well, that and a little help from an Abercrombie gift box :)

Anyways, after I sprayed the block, but while it was drying, I grabbed my handy dandy Making Memories Slice, and I cut a cute little "S" with the Sock Hop design card.

I cut it with white vinyl. And, I like it.

So, as soon as the block was dry, I added the vinyl.....and Tada!!! I love it!

And, it looks GREAT in my kitchen, next to my massive Starbucks cup, of course!

OWN- The Next TV Star

I was so excited to be offered the chance to preview the first episode of Your OWN Show: Oprah's search for the next TV Star.

The show actually airs this Friday, January 7,2011. However, I was able to watch the first episode today, and it is just great!

It is a blend of the apprentice, and the skills and team concepts that they need, and the Oprah Show and all of the coolness that it has.

Now, I know, I know. It's NOT the Oprah Show. Yes, it's a reality show. But, it's real people aspiring to be a Talk Show Host.

It's real people with real families and real goals and dreams and talents.

I like it. I like the concept. I like the challenges. I like the whole thing!

It was a great episode, and I am sure that it will inspire people to tune in weekly as these real-life people compete and dream their way to being the Next TV Star!

Now, you know I am a fan of the stay at home mom, and I absolutely LOVE the looks on their faces when Oprah walks in for the first time. You can tell that they are fans of hers, and just shocked when they see her for the first time....it's like a "on my TV.in my living room.but really here in the studio.experience!!!! Very cool. *um, I know the feeling*

***And, one of the VERY best parts.....because it was a sneak preview...straight from the production crew....it was COMMERCIAL FREE!!! No ads, no spam, no nothing!!! Yahoo!!!!

2010 in review........part 1

Sometimes, when I take a second to look back...either a week, month, or in this case YEAR in review, I am reminded of just how much fun life is, and how blessed I am!!

What a fabulous 2010.....let's take a look:

January 2010:

We started brought in the New Year at Joe and Emily's house! Love this!
The next day, we took off for a family trip to Walt Disney World! Yes, a TON of us! Scott's whole family! We had so much fun with them for their first trip!

And, how fun! A night at the Circus, and Scott treated us to a major fun experience with the RingMaster and some of the clowns!

February 2010:

We had snow in Alabama!!! It was beautiful!

Then, I had so much fun with the boys, while they ran the Mercedes Marathon. Chap ran the Kids Marathon..um, can you tell he had fun?

And, Mason ran the 5k. FREEZING. Snow. Yes. FREEZING!

I went to the Beth Moore book signing and got to meet her again....ooooh, just to soak up some of her goodness!

Of course, we celebrated National Pancake Day!

March 2010:

Look how much fun we have sometimes at home! I could NOT resist this shot!

I LOVE hanging out in my boys' classes, and with their friends, I was so thankful his teacher snapped this of me reading one morning to their class.

Me and some of my Princess friends, zipped down to Walt Disney World for the Disney's Princess Half Marathon. Running, friends, characters, and a tiara! That's my kind of race!

Then, we wisked Diane away for her 40th birthday suprise! And, what a surprise it was! Surprise, Diane!!! You're going to Hollywood!!!

First stop....Oprah Winfrey! Yes, her Post Oscar party, live from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood!!!

And, then after the show....we dashed over to The Price is Right...for a little fun......

The boys just chilled on Spring Break....a little fishin'

A little fun at the McWane Center....(I know it's gross, who cares, it was fun)

April 2010:

At my birthday party, where all of my friends were gathered to "watch" the show.......they were SURPRISED when they saw all of us ON the show!!! Not only were we in the audience...but, yes, there we were!!!!

And, well, they called my name! They called me.....COME ON DOWN!!!!

And, these were "my people".........look how excited they were!

Needless to say, Mr. Smith was shocked!!!!! He had NO idea!!!

And, all of these fabulous people came to be a part of the fun!

Then, the VERY next day.....Scott surprised me with a trip to Barber's Motorsports...where I met Patrick Dempsey!!!!

Then, on my actual birthday, Scott invited a bunch of my friends to dinner, and a field trip for the girls to Charming Charlie's! (my 35th was a GREAT one!)

We went for a very fun Easter Egg Hunt at Talladega SuperSpeedway......bazillions of eggs!
Our Life Discovery Class at Eden Westside Baptist Church took family photos for our church members on Easter Sunday! I loved doing this as a service to our church family.
Finished up the month with a field trip to the Birmingham Zoo with some of my favorite kids on the planet!
We ran Casey's Cause, for my friend Brandi!

May 2010:

The Crawfish Boil. A great big outdoor party. Good Times with good friends!

We went to a Mello Yello celebration where Mason entered the 2 liter Chug contest....and...well....the 2 liter went DOWN...and then it came UP!

And the husband was in his Mello Yello Groove!

We took the kiddos to the Strawberry Patch. Very cool. (Macy was recovering from her punch to the eye by the softball, so I HAD to include this one :)
It was while we were on our way home from the Strawberry Patch, that I found out I WON a trip to LA with Bertolli....

all expense weekend, where I met Rocco Dispirito,

And LaToya Jackson!
Me, Kristin, and Diane had fun chasing sports celebs around the Regions Golf Tournament!

Had a GREAT Mother's Day with my sweet boys.
Mason had his end-of-the-year FFA Banquet.
Mason played his first football game as a Pell City Panther!

And, the end of an era. Both of my boys had Ms. Whitten for their Kindergarten teacher, and now...they we are leaving Eden Elementary and they are almost as tall as her. We love Ms. Whitten more than words can ever express!!

And, me and Susie became Authorized Disney Vacation Planners! A dream come true!

One tough week.

Where to start?

One tough week. How can this first week of December be so tough?

The month of tidings and joy?

The month of festivities and cookies and candy and gifts?

The month of Santa Claus and Elves and garland and wreaths?

But, for some friends. This week is tough.

One week ago, today, a friend's house burnt. A mom. A dad. 5 children. Lost nearly everything they have. A few things were thought to be remaining and hopeful that they might could salvage some remains.

But. NO.

Then, the next night...the house caught fire. AGAIN.

Heavens. No! Yes, it did.

They lost it all. Ashes. You know, we know that it's all STUFF...but dang it. It was THEIR stuff.

Praise the Lord, they were all ok, and we know that that is what matters. But, it's still tough to watch.

Then, this weekend, another family struck with tragedy. And, as I type, their 13 year old, is being taken off the vent, as his mom and dad have been told there is no brain activity.

How can this be?

Why, oh why should a mom and dad have to endure such heartache?

But, I know, that God has a plan. I know, that I know, that His grace is sufficient.

And, so, in my warm home, with both of my boys healthy, I type....and it reminds me...yet again (dang I must be stubborn)...it's ALL His. ALL His. Everything is HIS. From the stars in the sky to the depths of the ocean floor (yeah, catchy like a song, huh!). It's all HIS.

But, it's not easy to take when you are in the midst watching it all surround you.

Jesus, please help my friends...and their friends...and their family.

It's been one tough week.

Georgetown Cupcakes!!!!!

The *minute* that we were certain we were going to Washington.....I knew that a stop at Georgetown Cupcakes would be on the agenda!

And, believe me....it is not the easiest little place to get to (when you are mostly traveling on foot!)....but, nonetheless....we made it!

First off, Georgetown is such a quaint little city, and I love it! I quickly fell in love with the hustle and bustle of this college-age town, and loved walking the crooked, tiny, narrow streets! What a fun little place!

Ok, back to the cupcakes at hand!

We finally were getting closer to the street....and, we turned the corner...to find this! The line! Ahh the line! Now...most people HATE a line! Nope. Not me. Not for this! I was happy to be IN the line. A part OF the line! Yay! We were here!

Now, to grab a menu and decide what we wanted. Yum! Cupcake of the day! Yum!!

Look at these little beauties in the window! It's almost like they were waving at me!!!

And, then, to decide. I thought I had my mind made up, and then I saw these!

Oh, it was just too hard!
We took a dozen with us! Yes, a dozen! Quick math = 3 each!

We all wanted a Red Velvet! Oh, and that cream cheese icing! It was like no other!

So, out we go, cupcakes in hand, yum!

When Scott started reading this book,Radical by David Platt, he kept saying....it's changing my life....I was thinking "oh dear....." because he tends to be an extreme-ist.

But, I picked it up myself (and did NOT tell him!) because I was a little curious.

Now, I am NOT, I repeat NOT a reader.....so for me to voluntarily read something that really does NOT interest me....well, let's just say, that part has God all over it!

Regardless, I read it. And I could not put it down.

Painful. Convicting.

But, so well written, and simply....well.....Life Changing.

And, is God would have it, we spent the weekend....just us.....and on the drive to Georgia....all weekend...and then the drive home.....we found ourselves saying "ok, back to the book...."

And, well, I wish you would read it for yourself.....but let me just say, I think God has some "radical" things in store for The Smiths!

The Tour of the Capitol

First off, I love this shot of my little guy! I really think I have taught him well! He's an avid tourist AND photographer! Ahh!!!

Well, we wandered into the Capitol, just wanting to "look around" and we were somewhat hopeful. They greeted us with a smile! When I asked about a tour, they said sure!! We have some open spots going in NOW!

So, off we went! Tickets in hand!

As we were approaching the entrance of the tour, I was just not encouraged by the excitement of this lady! Um, does she know that she is asleep in OUR NATION'S CAPITOL!!!!!!! I mean, come on, I am not a "museum lover" myself, but puh-leeeze!

So in we went on our guided tour. I love these little "headphone tours" where we all look like dorks and the Tour Guide looks like he's just walking and talking to himself.

So, we walked, in and through, and around...and then.....AHH! We were in the DOME! Actually just standing right underneath it! Oh, what an awesome feeling!

I am not sure why I loved it so much, but I did. Just knowing that I was standing under such an iconic symbol of our nation. Very cool.

Yes, here are my guys....and this is pretty much what everyone was doing. Just looking up. In awe.

As we walked by this. I could not help myself. They tour guide kept saying, don't stop in the hall. Just keep moving.

Hello. Are you serious. I have to stop to take this picture.

And, now, just a day or so later........I am glad I did! See ya, Nancy!

There was lots more to see, and stare at. But, as we exited, I loved this replica statue of Freedom.

Freedom is the statue on TOP of the Capitol. To be quite honest, I've never really paid it any attention, but seeing it up close...very cool.
And, then, more looking, staring, reading. Yes, more of the museum nerd (but, I love him, just the same) He kept saying, "hey, it's my first time here" "hey, we might never come back here".....I finally assured him...um, yes we will!

Then, over on the other side, this very cool, cute, dainty little statue of Helen Keller. I've always been fascinated by her, and her story. Very cool.

So, then we headed out of the Capitol, and towards the Library of Congress. We were so excited to be in the midst of all of this stuff you "hear" about, but really, never think you will experience!

Such a cool, amazing, thing.

Oh, yeah, and remember her......well, look at her, up and at'em.....Just as chipper as she can be. I think I even heard her whistling :)

Randy Houser - They Call Me Cadillac

When I got this CD in the mail......I did not wait ONE little second!!! I opened it immediately, to begin my "official review"! (hey, it's a hard job, I know!)

So, it only took me a second to remember that the sound of his voice, mixed with the mad skills of the musicians he works with, is enough to keep me listening all day!

This CD is NO exception! His talents are crazy good, and Country Music is just that much better because we have the likes of Randy Houser!

Not to mention, that his bad boy look mixed with his country boy charm, is enough to make me swoon, driving down the road!

What? Another track or two...yes, please! I'll keep listening!

...and I did!

I also love that you can find some of the background info on the songs on his site.

Here's what he has to say about the Title Song "They call me Cadillac"

"My buddy Davidson just started calling me 'Cadillac' one day. Everybody asks me how he came up with that name, and I just tell them "it's because I like everything real smooth. I like everything laid back like that. I don't like anyboyd messing with my good time'! Along those same lines, Brice [Long] and I were on the bus and I started playing that bluesy lick and the verse just came out. "I've been known to lay around all day...." The rest of it came flying out, like it was one of those things that just cosmically happened. I couldn't think of a better name for the record."

The history on this project:
Randy Houser's second album, They Call Me Cadillac, will be released Sept. 14 by Show Dog-Universal Music. Houser wrote the first single from the album, "I'm All About It." Lee Ann Womack sings harmony on one of the tracks, "Addicted." The album was co-produced by Cliff Audretch and Mark Wright. "I put my heart into this record," Houser said. "We went into the studio with a direction in mind, conceptually, for the album, and the result is something I'm really proud of. I think people are ready to hear real country music again, and I'm one of them." Houser's hits include "Anything Goes," "Boots On" and "Whistlin' Dixie."

So, the first stop was at the National Museum of the American Indian. What a very cool place. We actually went there first because we were STARVING.

Um, not so sure this was the place to go (although it came highly recommended). It had all kinds of weird-indian-named food! So, I settled for the Chicken Mole burrito. (would be that be mole...like you know. MOLE...or is that supposed to be mol-e....you know like hosea?) Anyways, it was ok. Just ok. I would not recommend it. None of us were in love with our selections, but, like I said, we were starving, so anything was good at this point!

Then, we went thru the museum watching all of the movies, and looking at all of the artifacts.

I could NOT resist this sign! I think I need to paint it in our home!

Um, without a doubt....I AM SUMMER PEOPLE!

Ok, then back outside, to enjoy more of the National Mall.

I realized more on this trip....really...WAY more...that my husband is a History Nerd. And, when I say Nerd.....that does NOT do it justice.
